uSky Transport arranged successful tests of rail fiberglass insulators

[12.11.2021]

Peerless innovative string rail is the basics of uSky technology. No wonder the very rail is a subject of continuous modifications under ceaseless upgrading and optimization of uSky Transport & Infrastructure Technology in general.

For construction of a test track at uSky Test & Certification Centre, it was decided to make the rail body along with individual members of track structure of fiberglass. With no designated power rail, in uSky wheel-rail pair the electric vehicle is being energized directly by the track itself. That said, electric current collection by the EV is occurring from the same rail it runs on. Give special attention to the weight of the EV up to 50 tons, when the loaded rail is a conductor simultaneously.

Thus, the requirements conventionally imposed on the power rail such as electric safety, current resistance, conductivity, insulation, etc., are, on top of that, toughened by the requirements imposed on the rail being loaded – these in the aggregate do considerably complicate the entire track structure.

In uSky suspended transit system, the rail cover and insulators are made of fiberglass.

In order to ensure the compliance of the applied fiberglass with the requirements set, a wide range of tests is a must as per certain standards for determination of its applicability to meet the established tasks. The tests have been conducted at Al Hoty-Stanger Laboratory.

Below are some of the tests, which were held at the laboratory:

  • Determination of tensile strength and elongation,

  • Determination of compressive strength,

  • Determination of flexural strength,

  • Determination of Charpy impact strength,

  • Determination of density,

  • Determination of interlaminar shear strength.

Based on the results obtained, our structural engineers carry out the comparative analysis of the properties reached with those set forth in the design.

The laboratory test results have revealed that fiberglass insulators are in compliance with uSky design requirements, thus the selected fiber glass may be used when engineering the rail.
